Over-the-counter cold and flu medication can have serious side effects inchildren under the age of 6ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ It's cold and fluseason, which means misery for kids and the parents trying to help them. But doctors are asking parents to resist the urge to give children underthe age of 6 over-the-counter cough and cold medication.Such drugs can have serious side effects on the smallest of children, theFood and Drug Administration warns. Side effects include hives, drowsiness, difficulty breathing and even death."Some 7,000 children end up in the emergency room each year because ofproblems associated with these medicines," says Esther Yoon, M.D., generalpediatrician in the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases at theUniversity of Michigan Health System.Roughly two-thirds of incidents occurred after children drank medicationwhile unsupervised, according to the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention. Most problems have occurred as a result of dosing errors. To ease pain from a harsh cough or throat pain, doctors recommend usingover-the-counter acetaminophen and ibuprofen in age-appropriate doses, Yoonsays. To relieve symptoms, doctors recommend the following: For blocked noses, parents should use nasal saline drops and a bulb suction to loosen up and remove mucus or have the child blow their nose. For coughs, the child should be given a teaspoon of honey or corn syrup if over the age of 1. Have the child drink warm fluids like water, apple juice and chicken broth to help with coughing. Take the child into the bathroom and run a hot shower.

"Children should get plenty of vitamin C and E tohelp fight germs and a multivitamin is also helpful."Cold symptoms caused by a virus typically last between four and five days. But if they continue for more than five days, Yoon recommends taking the childto a doctor. If a child is having difficulty breathing or is wheezing, he or she shouldbe seen right away. Infants younger than 3 months old with a fever should alsobe seen right away. For more information, visit these Web sites: FDA recommendation: http:// What to do for colds and flu: http:// of Michigan Health SystemMargarita Bauza, , or Andi McDonnell, , bothof the University of Michigan Health System, 1-734-764-2220. The NHL has a three-goalie race for the Vezina Trophy this season: Martin Brodeur, Ryan Miller, and Ilya Bryzgalov.Bryzgalov has built up a strong resume this season, as he is currently tied for first place with Miller and Tim Thomas in shutouts.Despite playing in 32 games this season, his four shutouts have already bypassed his shutout total from last season with the Phoenix Coyotes.Bryzgalov needs two more wins to register 100 victories in his NHL career. Seventy-two of those victories have come with the Coyotes.Bryzgalov is ranked third all-time in Coyotes history, and could bypass former Coyotes Nikolai Khabibulin (92) and Sean Burke (97) for most wins in Coyotes history. By the time Bryzgalov finishes his NHL career, he will be regarded as the greatest Coyotes goalie of all-time.If Bryzgalov can defeat the Anaheim Ducks tonight, then he could possibly secure his 100th NHL career at home on Saturday against another division rival, the Los Angeles Kings. The Vezina Trophy candidate has been the Coyotes MVP this season as the team is two points away from the fourth seed in the Western Conference, and is five points shy of tying division rival San Jose Sharks for the best record in the Western Conference.Bryzgalov has set career highs in shutouts, and is only six wins away from tying his career high for most wins in a season, and the season isn’t even halfway over.. There's something cooking in New York and no, it's not the Mets.Melky Cabrera got shipped away to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Javier Vazquez and he'll have his second stint in pinstripes. With Curtis Granderson as one of the newest outfielders for the Yankees this doesn't seem surprising, but with Hideki Matsui off to California (even though he served as a designated hitter in 2009) and Johnny Damon more than likely on his way out, why trade away an outfielderUnless, there's another sure deal in the works. That's where Jason Bay comes in. No matter what anyone says, Bay is not coming back to Boston. It's more than clear.Bay could very well be the newest signing in New York after Christmas. If that does happen, where does this leave Red Sox fans Will he be another traitor just like DamonWill fans boo him so hard every time his name is announced or comes to the plate at Fenway they'll lose their voicesOr how about making creative signs to show their true feelingsYes it would be devastating, I mean this guy came from the Pittsburgh Pirates and no one knew who he was until he replaced Manny Ramirez in 2008.

Now all of a sudden everyone wants this guy, including the Yankees. But it's true props to Theo Epstein for finding him first. It always seems to happen this way. Maybe Bay will be smart and go to Seattle like everyone else.Like what you see Follow me on Twitter to Present at CJS Securities 9th Annual 'New Ideas ForThe New Year' Investor ConferenceCHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Jan 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ Astec Industries,Inc.
