Are you being treated fairly at work?

Do you know what your rights are?

As this section develops, it will give you information about your basic rights at work, and tell you where you can go for more advice and support.

Bad employers get away with exploiting and mistreating their staff, because people don’t know what rights they have and are too afraid to challenge an employer that is treating them unfairly.

Use this section to find out more about your rights, what you can do if you think you are being treated unfairly, and what your trade union can do to support you at work.

I’m currently still employed by my enmployers in question but I have an enquiry I was hoping I could get some advice with.
I started my employment in June, a week before a big event this company puts on every year.I left a £20.000 a year career in sports management to join this company on £21.000 a year. I think they employed me in desperation not thinking about what they actually wanted.
After this event has finished another 2 in the summer come up, so the summer was very busy! I was never trained during this time and tried to pick this job role up as i went along. On December 6th I was told I had failed my 6 month trial period but was given a rave review after my 3 months. I was told by my manager that we were getting a new computer system in place and so she would be looking for an I.T specialist/accountant, which wasn’t me!! My manager asked if I would stay to the end of December to get them through Christmas, I said I would.
At the beginning of January they had a stockcount so asked me to stay on longer but they would be putting me on a temp contract on £7.00 an hour. I excepted! After the stockcount my boss went on holiday for 2 weeks so the supervisor asked the boss if I could stay for the 2 weeks. I did!
When my boss came back I said I would be leaving because I had found another job.
My boss had obviously seen the good work I had done and asked me to stay with a £5000 a year pay cut. I deceided to stay to prove I’m not a failure and can do the job but I feel harshly treated and was hoping you might have some advice for me.

    Hi Steve,

We can’t actually give advice through this website but I suggest that you contact your union. If you are not currently a union member then you would benefit from joining one.
    Take a look on http://www.worksmart.org.uk/unionfinder/
to find the most suitable union for you.

    Best wishes,
    Natasha
