Equalities Minister, Jane Hutt AM joined Natasha Hirst, Wales TUC Equal at Work project officer and Christine Newman, of the Pensions Forum Wales in the Assembly to launch a new poster campaign aimed at highlighting and eradicating age discrimination in the workplace.
The poster campaign is the first in a planned series of materials to highlight and tackle discrimination in the workplace. The Equal At Work 2-year project, which is funded by the Dti and run by the Wales TUC, aims to support unions to promote equality and advise on discrimination issues.
Supporting the campaign, Assembly Government Minister for Equalities, Jane Hutt AM said:
“We have made huge strides on the equalities agenda in Wales, testing all our Assembly government policies against cross-cutting equalities measures, campaigning on equal pay issues and working with trade unions and equalities organisations.
“Discrimination in any form is unacceptable and must not be tolerated. Trade unions are ideally placed to provide a real step-change, delivering the equalities message and taking on the ground measures which stand up for the rights of working people and eradicate unlawful discrimination across Wales.’
Speaking about the project, Felicity Williams, Wales TUC General Secretary said:
‘With the reorganisation of key equalities bodies in Wales trade unions are stepping up their campaign and resources to take forward the enforcement of anti-discrimination legislation in the workplace.
‘Our aim is to work with union representatives, in partnership with employers to raise equality issues like age discrimination up the workplace agenda and ensure everybody is thinking about their own workplace practices which may be particularly discriminating against vulnerable workers.’
The Director of Age Concern Cymru, Robert Taylor, said:
“Older people can contribute enormously to the workplace, bringing a wealth of experience and in many cases excellent communication skills. Too often it seems that age discrimination prevents older people from contributing fully at their place of work.”
“All the evidence shows that an age diverse workforce benefits an organisation. To encourage this, employers need to remove mandatory retirement ages, introduce flexible and part-time work, and provide equal acc ess to training and development opportunities, whatever a person’s age.’
Since new Age regulations came into force on 1 October 2006 employers can no longer discriminate against employees on the grounds of age. Surveys show that the most commonly cited form of employment discrimination is age bias, and that it can affect workers of all ages.
Equal At Work is currently piloting a training course and a series of seminars to equip union representatives with the right tools to bring equality to the bargaining table in the workplace and has launched a website to support project work at www.equalatwork.org
